what is apropriate for formal wear on an alaskan cruise in july?
since it is in the summer i was wondering if it would be wierd to wear black tights under a coctail dress even though it's cold. should i wear something more summery? or does it not matter because it's alaska and it's cold?

- No black tights under a cocktail dress sounds so cool and pretty! You could wear whatever you want, but in my opinion, it's always fun to wear something wintery and beautiful when you're in a cold place/area, rather than the typical summer dress because we always get the opportunity for summer formal wear, but not as much for winter. HAVE FUN!!!
- Alaska is not cold in July for the most part. Besides, the cruise ships are not cold at all, so even a slinky strapless dress would be fine and you would not get cold. Leave the tights at home and just wear your cocktail dress as is. That is what I do and with dressy sandals too. You only need warmer clothes for shore excursions and even then, it may actually be quite warm at any of the ports. BTW, it often rains in Ketchikan, so a poncho may come in handy.
- If you are talking formal go with black or nude nylons. The guys will have jackets won't they and socks on. They won't have on boat shoes. Nylons at formal events never look wrong.
- Trust me, Alaska in July on a cruise won't be cold. They are experiencing temps in the 80's right now. Try a cocktail dress or opt for a long formal gown. It does matter if you are going to celebrate formal night. The capt, crew and most others will be dressed up. I have seen extremely formal with ball gowns and I have seen cocktail dresses. Be forewarned though, the ships, even though they are in Alaska, will have the air conditioner on inside the ship and you will need some kind of wrap - either a shoulder wrap, scarf or sweater to keep from freezing indoors. Sometimes it seems colder inside than out.
