- Are you thinking formal like cocktail dresses and suits? Or More like slacks and nice skirts? DH and I both work professionally, and unless it's a "bar night" or a weekend out bumming we always have slacks on. If this is what you mean I suggest not wearing anything but black or dk grey slacks, as they look more formal than beige or other light colored slacks, nice LONG-sleeved full buttoned up and no PLAID, stripes ok, just no plaid, it looks unprofessional, and light colored slacks IMO look chintzy. Good Luck. JC Penneys, always has a sale, and to start off 1/2 button knit shirts in somber colors will give you a formal more professional look, for not a lot of bank.
- You use the term "formal clothes." In almost every instance, this means at the least a matching suit & tie (I'm speaking from a guy's perspective), and goes all the way up to a tuxedo. Here's the thing: formal dress does stand out especially in public. People think you're somebody who's doing something pretty neat. However, for daily wear you will quickly find that formalwear is just not practical. If you must sit for any length of time for your job or school, your formalwear shows wrinkles and mis-tucks much more than less formal clothing. Also, if you begin to wear formal attire all hours of each day, you will be much less known for being someone important going on an important visit. Hope that helps a little.
- By formal, I'm assuming that you mean something like a tuxedo? I think that you will look ridiculous wearing a tux everyday unless it's part of a work uniform. Save that for the special occassions.
- Are there any good thrift stores or vintage clothing stores where you are? You could get a few blazers or tweed jackets, and ties and slacks to go with them. Maybe even complete suits (though you may have to have them altered).
