Can the combination of a toned down (print-wise) kurti and a trouser/pant be called a formal wear in India?

If not, what is an ideal formal wear to wear in India at work apart from the typical shirt pant or business suit?

1. yes i think so... It looks very presentable.
2. theres no ubstitute for a shirt and a trouser as a formal wear. if u wanna go for something diff try wearing a shirt and a skirt. wearing kurti can wok as a saturday office wear(semi formal stuff).
