What am I supposed to wear to Fall formal?

Fall formal is the homecoming equivilent at my high school, I know I am supposed to wear formal clothes, but as to what type, I am at loss. My dates dress may be violet in colour, Is there certain things not to wear, styles of formal wear, etc? If possible, a link to a website showing what to look for would be appreciated. Would wearing a black dress shirt and a tie that complements my date's dress be acceptable and not out of the norm? or would a suit and tie be more traditional?
