Do i have to wear formal to an interview?
I have an interview on thursday and it is a web development job. We usually do not wear formal on daily basis when going to work as web developers. I do understand the necessity so you can be presentable. But my challenge is the interview is after working hours, i wil come from work and go straight to the interview. At my current job they are not aware about this. So coming in the morning being all formal is going to be rather questionable. Can i call the interviewing company and ask if i may come wearing just smart?

- Formal means evening gown. You should wear a nice suit either with a skirt or pants. Shine your shoes and carry a nice handbag or briefcase. You should look business-like.
- This will be their first impression of you - make it count. If you are worried about being over dressed for interview, adapt the look a bit. For example, I hate wearing formal suits so when I go for interview I tend to wear a stylish pencil skirt with co-ordinating blouse/shirt and then loosely wear a tie. Being female that tends to throw some people!! Apart from feeling more comfortable and looking pretty darn good - I also stand out from the suit wearing clones. The lucky tie hasn't failed me yet!! The most important thing is to be presentable and comfortable. Good luck with the interview!! x
- Take a change of clothes--nice, business-like, but almost casual. Go to a restaurant rest-room and change, or even wear something you can spiff up with a nice jacket, nicer shoes, maybe with a heel, smart earrings, etc. and put them on in your car. I used to change everything, under my big shirt or turtleneck, in the car. Plan it right, you can do it. Practice changing. But it's so easy to go into a fast-food restaurant and change in the handicapped stall.
- You are a web designer, so you are not going to want to wear traditional business interview attire. I don't know what your interpretation of "smart" is. I would pick something along the line of this: http://www.anntaylor.com/catalog/outfit.jsp?ensembleId=7225&pCategoryId=3939&categoryId=3519&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_3519&loc=TN&N=1200004 FYI = this was the "best" outfit that was easy to find. It doesn't have to be so designer. It could be paired with some boots, etc. You can probably wear most of it all day and then switch out the blazer or shoes and maybe add the jewelry. Good luck!
