What is semi-formal wear to a christmas dinner party?

keep in mind that this is a semi-formal dress attire for college kids so nothing too fancy i suppose. I got invited to one of my best friend's christmas dinner party and she specified the attire to be semi-formal for dinner. What are some suggestions? I have these cute black pumps and a black trench coat which i know for sure i wanna wear but idk bout the dress, or shirt & shirt, or maybe dark washed denim skinny jeans? help please!
